GRAND MARSHALL 2023 - John Tortorella
A proud son of Calvello in the Basilicata region’s province of Potenza, John Tortorella has authored a classic American immigrant success story. After working his way through college by cleaning swimming pools, John used his experience and insight to start a pool construction company that’s evolved into the Tortorella Group, a $23 million family of businesses with a workforce of nearly 175 It all began when John immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 11, and worked alongside his father, a mason by trade, while attending school. As he went on to college at New York Institute of Technology, John began cleaning swimming pools to earn money. In the process, he recognized needs in the market that were not being met: He saw a lack of creativity, quality, and dedication in the swimming pool business. After graduating from NYIT in 1981 with a degree in business and marketing, he founded J. Tortorella Pools and set out to transform an industry. Attracting skilled laborers to his new company, John created a business that could handle all facets of pool construction, from permit applications and design to masonry and landscape design.
Despite humble beginnings – and the great effort it took to secure financial backing – John leveraged the knowledge he had gained while cleaning pools and his unwavering entrepreneurial spirit to become a recognized leader in both the pool construction industry and in the Long Island, New York region he calls home.
During the past four decades, he has successfully expanded his business beyond construction to continue to meet evolving client demands and market opportunities, servicing all water features, pool and home heating installation and repairs, as well as propane and bulk chemical delivery. Moving into the next chapter in 2022, the pool service, construction, heating and chemical entities were transitioned to new owners, now where John can focus on his most recent endeavor Elliptic Works.
He became a founding member of Elliptic Works LLC, which explores underwater applications for the Internet of Things using patent-pending technology based on visible light communications (VLC).
John and his work have been showcased in Forbes, House & Gardens and The New York Times, and J. Tortorella Pools is regularly ranked among the nation’s top 50 builders by Pool and Spa News.
Committed to the growth, fair regulation, and professionalism of the pool construction industry, John has served as the president and board member of the Long Island Chapter of the National Spa and Pool Institute (NSPI), and is a founding member of the Southampton Business Alliance. He also is active in local civic life, contributing to Independent Group Home Living, the American Heart Association, Camp Paquatuck, Goodfellows, and other worthy organizations.
John and his wife, Terry, live in Southampton, and are the parents of three sons and grandparents of four.

Grand Marshall 2017 - Father Edward Sheridan - Pastor of Saint Rosalie's Parish
Father Edward Sheridan
Pastor of Saint Rosalie’s Parish
I am in my eighth year as pastor here at Saint Rosalie's Parish. During this time our parish has grown in leaps and bounds. I thank the People of God of Saint Rosalie’s who welcome all new parishioners together with our vibrant faith community. How blest I am with my brother priests to celebrate the sacraments with the Saint Rosalie's parish family and work together in sharing our faith in Jesus Christ.
I am a graduate of Cathedral College, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and completed my theology at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington with a Master’s Degree in Theology in 2006 and a Master’s Degree in Divinity in 2007. In January of 2017, I received a Certificate in Spiritual Direction for Diocesan Priests completing a three year program at the Institute for Priestly Formation at Mundelein Seminary in Chicago. My background includes working in business for a number of years and returning to the seminary to complete my studies. I was ordained a transitional Deacon in 2006 and did pastoral work at Saint Mary's in Manhasset as a Deacon. I was ordained a priest in June 2007 and assigned to Saint Catherine of Sienna Parish in Franklin Square. I was appointed the Administrator of Saint Catherine's during Monsignor Thomas Groenwald's terminal illness.
I was appointed Pastor at Saint Rosalie’s parish in Hampton Bays in 2010. In 2014 I was elected and appointed Dean of the Peconic Deanery with 16 parishes including the North and South Forks of Eastern Long Island. I’m blessed to have worked with and continue to work with very capable and dynamic priests. September 1, 2017, I was appointed Interim Vicar of the Eastern Vicariate of the Diocese of Rockville Centre by Bishop John Barres. This position is to assist in helping to manage the Easter part of the Diocese in assisting the Bishop in providing for the spiritual welfare of its members.
I can celebrate Mass in both Italian and Spanish. I am Chaplain and 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and Chaplain of our Ancient Order of Hibernians at Saint Rosalie’s. I am also Chaplain for the New York State Troopers.
In 2016 I participated as Spiritual Director with young people discerning religious vocations at a retreat prior to World Youth Day in Bialystok, Poland and at W Y D in Krakow. I have participated in a number of World Youth Days including Denver in 1993 which helped me to recognize the call to the priesthood, as well as a priest at Sydney, Australia in 2008, and Madrid in 2011 with teenagers from St. Rosalie’s and our diocese attending.
In reflecting on my vision of the Church, I like to keep Saint Paul's analogy in mind: We are all one Body in Christ. I thank my family and friends for nurturing me in the faith we profess in a God of Love who cares deeply for each one of us. I have come to love Hampton Bays and the East End of long Island. It is a wonderful community where families can build a wonderful life. I am very honored to be asked to be the Grand Marshall of the 2017 San Genaro East Celebration. –Father Edward Sheridan
